What is witch hazel used for?
Witch hazel is commonly used to help soothe irritated skin caused by small cuts, insect bites, or hemorrhoids. It is also used to clean the skin and remove makeup.
Witch hazel may also be used for other conditions as determined by your health care provider.
How does witch hazel work (mechanism of action)?
Witch hazel is a liquid that is made from the witch-hazel plant (Hamamelis virginiana).It is an astringent, which means that it pulls water out of the skin, causing it to shrink. It also helps to reduce inflammation (swelling). Applying witch hazel to irritated skin can help to calm the skin and reduce irritation. Applying witch hazel to the face can help to tighten pores and remove oil.

How should I store witch hazel?
Most witch hazel products should be stored at room temperature, between 68 F and 77 F (20 C and 25 C). Store in a cool, dry place. Do not freeze. Follow any available storage instructions for the product you are using. Ask your pharmacist if you are not sure how to store your product.
Side Effects
What are the most common side effects of witch hazel?
The most common side effect of witch hazel is dry skin. Tell your health care provider if you have dry skin that bothers you.
There may be other side effects of witch hazel that are not listed here. Contact your health care provider if you think you are having a side effect of a medicine. What are the serious side effects of witch hazel?
While less common, the most serious side effects of witch hazel are described below, along with what to do if they happen.
Severe Allergic Reactions. Witch hazel may cause allergic reactions, which can be serious. Stop using witch hazel and get help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.
- Breathing problems or wheezing
- Racing heart
- Fever or general ill feeling
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
- Trouble swallowing or throat tightness
- Itching or skin rash
- Bumps on the skin called hives that can be red, pink, white, or brown depending on your skin tone
- Nausea or vomiting
- Dizziness, feeling lightheaded, or fainting
- Stomach cramps
- Joint pain

Who should not use witch hazel?
Allergies to Ingredients. People who are allergic to any of the following should not use witch hazel.

- Any of the ingredients in the specific product

What should I know about witch hazel before using it?
Follow the instructions that come with your witch hazel product. Keep witch hazel out of the reach of children.
Witch hazel comes in many forms that are applied to the skin, including a liquid, a spray, and liquid-soaked pads. When possible, wash the skin with soap and water and allow the area to dry completely before applying witch hazel. Wash your hands well after use.
Witch hazel is for use on the skin only. Do not place witch hazel inside of your rectum or vagina. Keep witch hazel away from your mouth and eyes. If you get witch hazel in your eyes, wash them right away with water.
If you are using pads soaked with witch hazel, the pads can be placed on the irritated skin for up to 15 minutes. If it is not possible to wash the skin with soap and water, the pad may be used to clean the area by gently wiping or patting the skin. When you are finished using a pad, throw it in the trash. Do not flush it down the toilet.
If your symptoms get worse while using witch hazel or they do not get better within 7 days, stop using witch hazel and tell your health care provider. If you are using witch hazel for hemorrhoids and you notice bleeding, stop using witch hazel and contact your health care provider.
What should I tell my health care provider before using witch hazel?
Tell your health care provider about all of your health conditions and any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. This will help them know if witch hazel is right for you.
In particular, make sure that you discuss any of the following.
Pregnancy. It is not known if or how witch hazel could affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby. Tell your health care provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
Breastfeeding. It is not known if witch hazel passes into breast milk. Tell your health care provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.
Interactions
Does witch hazel interact with foods or drinks?
There are no known interactions between witch hazel and foods or drinks.
It is unknown if drinking alcohol will affect witch hazel.
Does witch hazel interact with other medicines (drug interactions)?
There are no known interactions between witch hazel and other medicines. Always tell your health care provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using.
Overdose/Missed Dose
What should I do if I accidentally use too much witch hazel?
If you or someone else has used too much witch hazel, get medical help right away, call 911, or contact a Poison Control center at 800-222-1222.
What should I do if I miss a dose of witch hazel?
Witch hazel is meant to be used only when needed. Follow the instructions on the product label or use it as your health care provider recommends. Do not use double or extra doses.
